Saastamoinen Foundation strengthens research in analogue image together with Uniarts Helsinki

In the age of digitalisation, the significance of analogue art forms persists. Analogue methods apply to both still and moving images, which are produced with light-sensitive materials. In order to preserve this traditional art form and to strengthen the international top-level expertise in the field, Saastamoinen Foundation has supported the establishment of a three-year post-doctoral research programme at the Uniarts Helsinki’s Academy of Fine Arts.

The research project focuses on examining still and moving images and their techniques within the borderlines of analogue and digital mediums. Renowned artist and researcher Kerstin Schroedinger (PhD) was selected for the programme’s researcher position thanks to her extensive experience in research-based artistic work, active publishing activities, interest in teaching and supervision, and a promising research plan.

Hailing from Germany, Schroedinger has previously held positions such as visiting lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts as well as assistant professor at the Zurich University of the Arts. She has worked in film, video, performance and sound, and her historiographic practice questions the means of image production, historical linearities, and the ideological assumptions of representation. During her upcoming time at the University of the Arts Helsinki, Schroedinger will be able to dive even further into the practices of producing analogue and digital images.

“Film as a transtemporal structure informs us how the analog past forms the origins of a present profoundly subject to an image-driven capitalism. Thus, the transtemporality of film allows us to resist the fatality of both technical and historical progressivity. Revisiting these images and reworking them in-between the analogue and digital workflows, the project seeks to ask to what extent technology criticism is able to intervene in the production processes of memory,” says Kerstin Schroedinger.

For Saastamoinen Foundation, supporting art education and internationalisation, such as the post-doctoral research programme, are at the core of their long-standing cooperation with Uniarts Helsinki.

“As a global partner for art and science, we at the Saastamoinen Foundation believe in transparency, internationalisation, expertise, and continuity. These values shape the support we offer to artists, researchers, art institutions and ground-breaking scientific projects. This new research programme is a great example of our multi-faceted partnership with Uniarts Helsinki, and it is also a testament to the work we do to nurture a thriving international art scene in Finland,” says Marja Karttunen, Member of the Saastamoinen Foundation's Board.
