Helsinki Graduate School of Economics (Helsinki GSE) is Aalto University’s, Hanken School of Economics’ and the University of Helsinki’s joint economic teaching and research unit. Its objective is to offer high-quality and innovative master’s and doctoral education with the best international researchers as well as to promote social discourse and interaction. Helsinki GSE also aims to increase the number of economics professors in Finland and renew the master’s and doctoral education. Finland currently has significantly less economics professorships compared to most of the other Nordic countries, despite the heavily increased demand for economics professionals in many sectors.
The aim of Helsinki GSE is to increase the amount and quality of economics research in Finland by 2022, renew master’s and doctoral education, support decision-making in the private and public sectors by providing professional services and expand collaboration between different disciplines. The education unit focuses especially on macroeconomics, public finance, quantitative economics and data science, among others.
Saastamoinen Foundation supports Aalto University’s Economics of Data Science professorship. Other supporters of the Helsinki GSE program include for example the Yrjö Jahnsson Foundation, VATT Institute for Economic Research, the municipalities of the Helsinki metropolitan area and the Ministry of Education and Culture.
