Barboza (b. 1981) is known for her labour-intensive textile-based works and large-scale, multi-sensory installations that combine traditional craft techniques with modern technologies.

The Peruvian artist explores natural materials and colours in her work, often linking them to specific landscapes and cultures. Her work is based on a deep understanding of ecosystems and their ancient knowledge, which she utilises in the age of climate change. Her works have been showcased worldwide, for instance in the 2022 Biennale of Sydney, Australia.

With the support of Saastamoinen Foundation, Barboza will present a new commissioned work for Helsinki Biennale 2025. Barboza’s work is to be showcased on Vallisaari Island, where the environment offers a unique platform for the artwork.

Helsinki Biennial 2025 will take place from 8 June to 21 September 2025 and will bring together around 35 artists and artist groups to Vallisaari Island, Esplanade Park, and HAM Helsinki Art Museum.

Helsinki Biennial 2025 and Saastamoinen Foundation are bringing Barboza’s unique artistic vision to Finnish and international visitors. Taking place for the third time next summer, this major visual arts event brings together contemporary artists from around the world under the theme of Shelter.
