Nicehearts has been granted the inaugural Minna Canth Award. This honour was presented in Kuopio on Minna Canth’s Day, 19 March 2026.

Nicehearts is an association founded in 2001 with the goal of ensuring that girls, women and families – considering gender diversity and self-identification – can find their place in society as equal and equitable members.

The Minna Canth Award highlights an action or initiative that strengthens democracy and promotes the future in a sustainable and just way. A writer and advocate for gender equality, Minna Canth (1844–1897) resolutely championed women’s right to education and independence at a time when such ideas were considered radical.

The award jury, chaired by author Sirpa Kähkönen, selected the winner from a high-calibre group of nominees. The jury also included, among others, Suzanne Innes-Stubb, spouse of the President of the Republic of Finland, and economist and public figure Sixten Korkman.

In its statement, the award jury noted that the work of Nicehearts carries forward the principles and values promoted by author Minna Canth throughout her life’s work.

The award amounts to EUR 35,000. Saastamoinen Foundation is one of the enablers of the award, alongside the Olvi Foundation, Genelec Ltd., and Säästöpankki Optian Säätiö. Saastamoinen Foundation originates from Kuopio, and with its support, the foundation honours its connection to the city, its rich cultural heritage, and the importance of continuing Minna Canth’s life’s work.

The award is organised by the City of Kuopio in collaboration with the University of Eastern Finland and Savon Sanomat.

Saastamoinen Foundation congratulates Nicehearts on this significant recognition.
