The Art Collection was deposited with EMMA – Espoo Museum of Modern Art when the museum was founded in 2006. Works from the collection are on permanent display at EMMA in changing installations. In addition, artworks from the Foundation’s collection can also be seen in public spaces in Espoo.
The newly launched Art Collection page complements the physical exhibitions, encouraging audiences to engage with the works also within the museum space. The online collection page also makes it possible to explore works that are not currently on display in exhibitions. Publishing the collection online increases transparency and enables it to be viewed, for example, from thematic and chronological perspectives. Audiences can gain an overview of the collection as a whole, the connections between individual works, and the Foundation’s acquisition policies.
The opportunity to explore a digital art collection from anywhere in the world promotes inclusivity. It enables access to art also for those for whom visiting a museum is not possible due to geographical or financial barriers.
Saastamoinen Foundation Art Collection comprises nearly 3,000 works of Finnish and international art.
The collection of Finnish art spans more than a century, ranging from Modernist painting of the 1910s to photographic and media art produced in the 2020s. The collection of international art draws on the ideas of European painting and Italian Arte Povera of the 1960s. These movements were selected for their focus on everyday life and materials, and for their exploration of humanity’s significance in the contemporary world. The collection is continuously evolving, with the aim of maintaining a high-quality, diverse, topical, and thought-provoking selection of works.
